Can I build a bluebird nest box for less than a ready-made one?
Yes. One untreated western red cedar fence picket, a pack of exterior-rated screws and a little exterior wood glue are enough for a bluebird nest box. What you actually pay is about $14 (Nov 2026), plus about $7.50 for exterior wood glue if you don't have any. A ready-made cedar bluebird house uses thicker wood and has a steel ring around the entrance hole, which this build does not.
